Tufty Fluffytail was a celebrated critter of the1950s, who was used as the face of the Tufty Club all the way through to the 1990s. He was designed in 1953 by Elsie Mills MBE, who brought him to life as a red fluffy squirrel wearing a handsome blue jacket with yellow trousers. He starred (with assistance from Bernard Cribbins) in his own set of fillers to rival Charley Says, but has also featured in informational books as well as other merchandise such as board games, puzzles and colouring books.
His most recognisable asset was the Tufty Club, which along with the fillers reinforced the message of road safety to children. By the 1990s he had had several design changes, with the last being his formal jacket and trousers being transformed into a t-shirt (with a T on it) and jeans. The Tufty Club’s inclusive method of educating children keeps him in the minds of thousands of former club members today.
