The Central Office of Information (1946 -2011)

When the Ministry of Information was dissolved in 1946, its duties were passed onto the Central Office of Information, (COI). COI worked with government departments and the public sector, to deliver informative campaigns to the public. The main purposes of COI were to transmit information through films, advertising, publications and events and promote the United Kingdom abroad. COI’s public information films or fillers were made for continuity between regular programming. These advertising fillers became the biggest part of COI’s business. In 1972, 22,000 fillers were broadcast with this increasing massively to 230,000 by 1998. In 2006 COI celebrated their 60th anniversary, but despite its success, it shut down in 2011 due to the coalition government’s austerity cutbacks. Unfortunately, there was no replacement, but many will remember the incredible output that COI gave us.
